For years I struggled to take action as i would try to get everything perfect before even starting. Once I stopped that, my business and revenue quickly shot up and business life became way easier. I know a lot of people who still get paralyzed by decision making not because they are lazy, but because they overthink everything. If that’s you, read this 🤓
Speed in decision making is somewhat counterintuitive because our instincts tell us to slow down but is key in forward progress. This is a leftover evolutionary mechanism where, under some kind of stressful decision, our defense mechanisms kick in and tell us to flee.
The problem is, this instinct kicks in whether or not the stress is positive or negative, so in situations where we are facing a stressor that can lead to a positive outcome, we still get that fight or flight response. This can lead us to spin our wheels in the same spot, never committing to a decision to get started or finish something we already started.
The best way I’ve found to help people overcome this is a concept author and world-renowned speaker @melrobbinspreaches in her book The Five Second Rule.
The concept is simple, when you face a decision where you have an instinct to speak up, get to work, introduce yourself to someone, etc. stop and count backwards from 5…then just DO IT.
You’ll never get everything perfect and more often than not, you’ll waste months trying to bring that idea or product to market for it not even work. I’ve now realised that my vision of ‘good’ is still above the average so I can deliver high quality content and products but in 20% of the time as i take rapid action on new ideas or concepts. Find the balance between speed, being sensible and quality – that’s when you’ll start winning 👌
