Over the years and the more and more books I’ve read, the more times I saw this mindset/strategy emphasised by many of the worlds top CEO’s and entrepreneurs.
Before applying it, I would tackle each day working on smaller tasks and while I would still be productive, I would miss out on some of the critical tasks that really moved the needle.
I’ve since learned to set 1-3 critical tasks per day and tackle these first. Once done, you can move onto micro tasks that don’t provide such a massive ROI for your business. This way, you know that even if your day takes a turn for the worst (like it does most days for entrepreneurs), you’ve still got the vital tasks done.
Remember, half of the other tasks you have, probably don’t even matter or should be outsourced to your team / an assistant. Sadly, you often put these first as it’s rewarding to tick of multiple small tasks than tackle a bigger yet more vital critical task. It makes you feel good, but it may not put as much money in your bank account at the end of the year – what would you prefer?
Even if you work as a employee in a 9-5 setting, applying this mindset into your life could easily get you a pay rise, make you a vital employee, help get you promoted and make your day less stressful. From tomorrow, focus ONLY on your top 1-3 critical tasks for that day before even thinking about a minor task, your emails or anything else.
Set your critical task the night before, or before you leave the office ready for the morning. Worst case, set them right as you get to work or even before you leave the house, when you are still free from distraction and able to think clearly. Give it a try and see how it positively impacts your life, business and pay check 💰
